TOWSON, Md., -- Junior defender, Sarah Shklanko (Huntington Beach, Calif.), was named to the All-Goucher Second Team following a successful season for the field hockey team in 2016.
Shklanko scored two goals and handed out an assist for the Gophers who ended the season with an 8-9 overall record and 3-4 record in conference play, earning a berth to the Landmark Conference Championship semifinal.
Shklanko's first goal came in a non-conference matchup against cross-town rival, Stevenson University. The junior defender received a cross in from senior Lizzie Barminski and buried the ball in the cage through extensive traffic, giving Goucher some wiggle room at the end of the game. The Gophers went on to seal their third win of the season, 5-3.
Shklanko also went on to score three points in conference play over Moravian in a 5-0 win over the Greyhounds. She began the game with a helper in the 32nd minute, finding Barminski off the left post who converted the opportunity into a goal. Later, Shklanko cashed in on a long shot off the corner to increase Goucher's lead 3-0. She was named Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the Week following the performance.
Shklanko was a major contributor on defense for Goucher, a team that allowed only 1.70 goals per game. She played in and started all 17 games for the Gophers, giving them stability throughout the entire season, and guided them to their first Landmark Conference Championship tournament since 2007.
For her efforts, Shklanko was named to the All-Landmark Conference Second Team, the 11th Goucher field hockey player to receive All-Conference designation since 2007.
The All-Goucher Team is selected by a panel of athletic administrators and represents the 10 most distinguished student-athletes and most outstanding coach during an academic year. The All-Goucher team was established in 2010-11 and is selected annually.
From June 2nd, 2017 until June 16th, 2017 Goucher will unveil one new member of the 2016-17 All-Goucher Team every weekday at 2:30 p.m. For a complete list of last year's 2015-16 All-Goucher Team, click here.
