TOWSON, Md. – The Goucher College men’s tennis team (15-10, Landmark 5-2) will compete for the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championship for the second consecutive year following a 5-1 win in the Landmark Conference Championship match on Sunday.
The Gophers will begin their road to the championship only a few miles from home, opening their run at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. During the 2017 NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championship draw, Goucher pulled John Carroll University in the first round and will square off against the Blue Streaks on Friday, May 12th at 2 p.m.
Goucher is making its third appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship after taking down Juniata, 5-1, in the Landmark Conference Championship. The Gophers first made an appearance in the NCAA tournament under head coach Rob Hubbard in 2005, falling to Mary Washington, 4-0, in the first round.
In 2016, Goucher defeated Yeshiva, 5-2, in the opening round of the NCAA championships, advancing to the second round for the first time in school history. The Gophers fell to No. 5 Carnegie Mellon, 5-0, knocking them out of the national championship tournament.
In 2016-17, John Carroll has a 16-7 record, including an 8-0 record in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Over the weekend, the Blue Steak marched through their conference tournament, winning 5-0 in each round en route to their third consecutive OAC championship.
In 2016, JCU made an early exit from the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships, falling to Carthage College, 3-5.
The NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championship Weekend will be held in Chattanooga, TN at the Champions Tennis Club May 22-27, 2017.
