TOWSON, Md. - The Goucher College Department of Physical Education and Athletics has announced that John Gatto has been named Director of Athletic Communications. Gatto will begin his duties at Goucher on November 13.
“After a national search that brought us a number of strong and experienced candidates, we are thrilled to announce the hiring of John Gatto,” said Director of Athletics Geoff Miller. “John has close to ten years of experience in the field of athletic communications” Miller continued. “He knows the Landmark Conference well, has experience with video and all social media platforms, and he has proven to be nimble and adaptable in a business that is dynamic and changing daily. We can’t wait to get him on board and integrate him into our team here in athletics”.

Having the chance to publicize the accomplishments of Gopher student-athletes and coaches both on the field and off of it is a thrill and an honor, and I can’t wait to get started.”
Gatto will join Goucher’s Department of Athletics from another Landmark Conference member, the University of Scranton, where he served as the Athletics Communications Assistant since August of 2015. He also joins the department with over nine years of professional experience in the field of Athletic Communications, working at three different levels of competition (NCAA Divisions I & III and the NAIA)
In his time in Scranton, Gatto assisted in the publicity of 23 intercollegiate sports, serving as the main contact for 10 of those sports. Over the last two seasons, the Royals and Lady Royals hosted Landmark Conference Championship events in various sports, as Gatto served as the media contact for the men’s soccer and women’s basketball teams, who both advanced to the NCAA Tournament two seasons in a row after winning Landmark Conference titles. In both 2016 and 2017, Gatto assisted in all media relations efforts as Scranton hosted First and Second Round games of the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament, along with the Sectional Round of play in 2016. He also publicized two student-athletes for CoSIDA Academic All-American honors during the 2016-17 athletics season and assisted in social media efforts for the athletics department throughout his tenure.
Gatto joined the University of Scranton athletics department off an almost five-year tenure at Union College in Barbourville, Ky., where he served as the Director of Sports Communications (2014-15) and the Assistant Director of Sports Communications (2010-2014).
At Union, Gatto was instrumental in the publicity efforts for an athletics department that offers 23 intercollegiate sports, which included serving as an administrator of the athletics website, working as the athletics department photographer and nominating athletes for conference and national awards. He also served as the media relations coordinator for the 2012 NAIA Women’s Golf National Championship and the 2013-14 NAIA Baseball National Championship – Kingsport Bracket. He was recognized by his peers when he was voted the Appalachian Athletic Conference’s SID of the Year in May 2014.
Before going to Union, Gatto served as a Media Relations Assistant Georgia Tech (2009-2010) in Atlanta, where he was the media contact for men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, and men’s and women’s track & field. He also assisted in publicity efforts for the 2009 ACC champion football team and the school’s nationally ranked men’s and women’s basketball teams.
Gatto started his professional career in August of 2008 when he was hired as the Assistant Director of Media Relations at the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. While there, he was the media contact for men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s track & field, and also assisted in publicity efforts for men’s basketball and baseball.
Gatto, a native of Old Forge, Pa., is a 2008 graduate of Bloomsburg University, where he earned a degree in Mass Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations. At Bloomsburg, he worked in the Sports Information office for four years, assisting in the media relations operations for 18 sports.
