Armao Strikes Twice in Victory Over Phoenix

Spadanuta Picks Up Assist, Tallies Unassisted Goal

September 23, 2008

TOWSON, Md. – A pair of goals by Catherine Armao (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) staked Goucher to a 2-0 lead over Wilson before the end of the first half this afternoon. The Gophers tacked on an insurance goal in the closing moments of the contest and then celebrated their 3-0 triumph over the Phoenix.

Sara Spadanuta (Hackettstown, N.J./Warren Hills) was awarded an assist on Armao's goal less than seven minutes into the contest that put the Gophers (3-5) ahead 1-0. There were less than three minutes remaining in the opening period when the sophomore forward tallied her second goal, this time off an assist by Marissa Copan (Golden, Colo./Golden).

An unassisted goal by Spadanuta with 2:49 left to play closed out the scoring.

The Gophers limited the Phoenix (2-4) to five shots the entire contest. Freshman goalie Chloe Dircks (Williamstown, Mass./Williston Northhampton) earned the shutout by turning away four of them.
