Gophers Coast to First Landmark Victory of 2008-09

New Program Record for Fewest Points Allowed in Half: 12

January 17, 2009

TOWSON, Md. – Goucher held Moravian to 12 points in the first half tonight and then coasted to its first Landmark Conference victory of the season, a 76-53 triumph over the Greyhounds.

The Gophers (3-11, 1-4 Landmark) kept Moravian off the scoreboard for 8:19 until Chris Cullen's three-point field goal made the score 7-3. Cullen scored again on his team's next possession, this time a two-point basket, but then the Greyhounds went another 5:23 without a single point until Cullen knocked down a pair of free throws with 5:42 remaining before halftime.

The Greyhounds (5-10, 1-4 Landmark) were 4-for-26 from the field (.154) in the opening 20:00 and the 12 points they scored is the fewest the Gophers have ever allowed in a half. The Goucher men's basketball program's previous record for fewest points allowed in a half was 14 by Mary Washington on January 13, 1999.

The Gophers led 32-12 at the break and by as many as 31 points in the second half.

Fourteen of the 16 Goucher players who entered the contest contributed at least one point to the victory, but Micah Perry (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) and Marcus Cotton (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) were the only double-figure scorers. Perry tallied all 12 of his points in the second half, while Cotton bunched nine of his 11 into the opening period.

Amir Hakim (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College) was the leading rebounder for Goucher as he hauled in six and Nick DeSouza (Washington, D.C./Archbishop Spalding) topped the Gophers in assists (6) and steals (6).

Moravian's Eric Weaver, who accounted for two of his team's four baskets in the first half, finished with a game-high total of 19 points.
