Time Expires with Gophers Still Down One Goal

10-9 Setback to Poets Drops Team's Record to 6-3

March 28, 2009

TOWSON, Md. – Desperate to come up with the game-tying goal, Goucher got off a pair of shots in the final :06 against Whittier today. The first soared just wide and the second was snatched by goalkeeper Ben Brown, who with his 18th save of the contest preserved the Poets' 10-9 victory over the Gophers.

The Gophers (6-3) began the fourth quarter trailing 9-7, but twice were able to make it a one-goal game. The first time was on an unassisted goal by Jake Fratella (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) 5:04 into the period, but the Poets (5-5) went back up by two 1:19 later on a goal by Daniel McQuade. Then, with 6:15 remaining, an un assisted goal by Kyle Boncaro (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) reduced Goucher's deficit to 10-9.

The two teams were never separated by more than a goal until Anthony Lackey tallied an unassisted goal with just :20 remaining in the second quarter to put the Poets ahead 7-5 at halftime.

Even though the Goucher outshot Whittier, 12-3, in the third quarter, the Poets never allowed their lead to drop below two goals. Brown made nine saves in the period and the goals he gave up to Boncaro and Rory Averett (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) were matched by goals from Sam Russell and Sean McCarroll.

The only multiple-goal scorers for Goucher were Averett with three and Boncaro with two. Boncaro also was awarded a pair of assists.
