Kyle Hannan became only the third head coach
in the history of Goucher College’s men’s lacrosse
program when he was appointed to the position in November 2000,
making this his ninth season with the Gophers.
It didn’t take long for the Gophers to
blossom under Hannan. In his first year at the helm, the team
finished above .500 for the first time in program history by going
13-3. Not only was Hannan recognized as the top coach in the
Capital Athletic Conference that season, but he was also the
recipient of the C. Markland Kelly Award which goes to the top
collegiate coach throughout Maryland.
Hannan has guided the Gophers to 76 wins since
arriving at Goucher from Colorado College, where he was head
men’s lacrosse coach for two seasons. Prior to that he held
the same position at Virginia Wesleyan College for five years. His
overall record after 15 seasons as a head coach is 126-105.
Hannan attended Franklin High School in
Baltimore County before graduating from Salisbury University in
1986 with a B.S. degree in physical education. He was a four-year
starting midfielder at Salisbury, helping the Sea Gulls to three
appearances in the NCAA Division III playoffs. In 1985, Hannan
received the Charles B. Clark Award as Salisbury’s best
all-around player.
The 45-year-old Hannan launched his coaching
career as a graduate assistant at Salisbury from 1986-88. Later he
was the top assistant on the men’s staff at Hobart College,
and while he was there, the Statesmen won Division III national
championships in 1990, 1991 and 1993.
Hannan is an active member of the United States
Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association and either has served or is
serving on the following committees: Division III All-America
Selection, Division III Ranking, Scholar All-American and Division
III Coaches Advisory. In 1998, he was selected to coach in the
annual North/South College All-Star Game.
Hannan and his wife, Angie, are the parents of a
9-year-old daughter, Margo, and 6-year-old son, Kade.
