Gophers Finish Above .500 for First Time Since 1992
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Goucher spotted Moravian a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute of today's Landmark Conference match, but the Gophers were able to pull even prior to halftime on a successful penalty kick by Nate Margolis (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) and then went ahead to stay on an unassisted goal by Parker Bay (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) in the 63rd minute as they wrapped up their 2013 season with a 3-1 victory over the Greyhounds.
By winning, the Gophers (8-7-3, 2-3-2 Landmark) finished above .500 for the first time since 1992.
Jeffrey Algor's goal at 18:05 that was assisted by Brett Harder and Saul Marcial put the Greyhounds (7-9-2, 0-7 Landmark) on top, 1-0, but they were able to hold on to the lead for just over seven minutes before Margolis converted his fifth penalty kick of the season at 25:06.
Bay put Goucher ahead 2-1 at 62:12 after beating a defender on a 50-50 ball and depositing a ball into the left side netting for his fifth goal of the season.
John Sturgis (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding) set up the Gophers' third goal at 80:13 with a through ball that led to a one-time shot into the right side netting by Marco Grotti (Milmay, N.J./Millville). It was Grotti's first goal of the season.
Nicholas Stolarz (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) played all 90 minutes in goal for Goucer and was credited with five saves.
In 1992, the Gophers went 13-5-1 under the direction of head coach Steve Hornish. Since then, their best record for a season until this year was 9-9 in 2006.
