Cha Brings In Victorious Relay, Takes Second in 100 Breast

MADISON, N.J. — Goucher couldn't take down the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, which has won five consecutive Landmark Conference championships in the sport of men's swimming and diving, but head coach Thomas Till's squad didn't come away from today's three-team competition without at least one victory.

The Gophers bowed to the Mariners (6-0, 4-0 Landmark), 70-25, but they achieved a 72-23 win over Drew because there were only two individual events in which the Rangers (3-5, 0-4 Landmark) had a swimmer finish in front of Goucher's top entrant.

Goucher concluded the meet with its uncontested entry of Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville), Colin Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne), Sam Davis (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) and Brian Cha (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge) taking first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The foursome completed the event in 1:34.71.

That was Goucher's only first-place performance of the meet, but Morgan Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) placed second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.39) and Cha was runnerup in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.87). In addition, the entry of Colin Richter, Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont), Leonard and Davis took second place in the 200 medley relay (1:44.27).

The Gophers (4-5, 1-4 Landmark) came away with third place in eight individual events: Danny Carroll (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) in the 1,000 free (10:51.24) and 500 free (5:27.09), Morgan Richter in the 200 free (1:52.94) and 400 individual medley (4:40.44), Cha in the 50 free (:23.77), Colin Richter in the 100 free (:51.23), Dean Silverman (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) in the 100 backstroke (1:06.39) and Nelson in the 100 breast (1:06.13).
