Crusaders Prevail Thanks to Victory at First Singles
Covey, Simon Pick Up Sixth Singles Wins of 2007-08
April 10, 2008
SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Three wins in singles play allowed Goucher to pull even with Susquehanna in today's Landmark Conference match at 4-4, meaning the outcome at first singles would determine whether the Gophers or the Crusaders would come away with the victory.
In an extremely competitive, hard-fought battle, Susquehanna's Todd Adams managed to get past Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, NY/Solomon Schechter) 7-6 (7), 7-6 (2), giving the Crusaders (2-8, 2-4 Landmark) the point they needed for a 5-4 triumph over head coach Michael Vann's Gophers.
Goucher (4-8, 2-4 Landmark) picked up singles wins from Chris Covey (Exeter, NH/Exeter) at No. 2, Billie Weiss (Lutherville, MD/Dulaney) at No. 5 and Michael Simon (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) at No. 6. Covey defeated William Mellor 6-3, 6-2, Weiss polished off Tyler Rush 6-1, 6-4, and Simon earned a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Andrew Symonette.
Covey and Simon share the team lead in singles victories in 2007-08 with six apiece.
But three wins in singles play wasn't enough for the Gophers
since they came out on top in only one of the three doubles
matches: at No. 2, Simon and Covey recorded an 8-4 victory over
Matt Mitchell and Symonette.
