September 24, 2009

FREDERICK, Md. – Three freshmen were victorious in the first singles matches of their collegiate careers for Goucher today, but the Gophers needed a fourth win in singles play in order to avoid a 5-4 season-opening loss to Hood.

The Blazers (1-2) owned a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles play. The Gophers (1-0) picked up their point at No. 3 where freshmen Daniel Csete (Miami, Fla./Brewster Academy) and Brett Blackman (Philadelphia, Pa./J.R. Masterman) defeated Phil Yerby and Bilal Syed, 8-6.

Csete also prevailed at No. 5 singles. He took Yerby down in two sets, winning 6-1, 6-0.

Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and J.D. Collongette Fr. 5-9 (Miami, Fla./Suffield Academy) were the other two freshmen who made successful debuts during today's singles competition. Leonard, stationed at No. 4 in Goucher's singles line-up, knocked off Hood's Andrew Blowe 6-3, 6-2; Collongette defeated Syed, 6-0, in the first set at No. 6 before Syed opted to retire.

At No. 1 singles, Hood's Carter Reitman was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, N.Y./Solomon Schechter).
