Gophers Drop Opening Match of Spring to Shoremen

Hoesman Bows to Rajes in Three-Set Thriller at No. 1 Singles

TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's first match of the spring against Washington (Md.) featured a scintillating battle at first singles between Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) of the Gophers and Vishnu Rajes of the Shoremen.

Rajes prevailed 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4 and helped produce a 9-0 victory for the visiting Shoremen.

The Gophers (0-3) won only four games during the doubles competition, all at No. 1 where Hoesman and David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) were up against Rajes and Marc Cywinski. Rajes and Cywinski pulled out an 8-4 win.

Spivey and Cywinski met up again at No. 2 singles and Cywinski came out on top 6-0, 6-4.

The Shoremen (1-0) won the remaining four singles matches in straight sets.
