Murnin, Manfield Go Three Sets for Wins in Singles Play
OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Goucher chalked up its first win of the season this afternoon, a 7-2 triumph over Stevenson. In providing Brendan Kincaid with his first victory as a head coach, the Gophers prevailed in two of the three doubles matches and came out on top in five of the six singles matches.
Goucher's two wins during the doubles competiton came at No. 1 where David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) and John Bescoby (San Marino, Calif./Maranatha) topped Conrad Ellis and Robbie Baker, 8-3, and at No. 2 where Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and Pat Murnin (Salt Lake City, Utah/East) turned back Anthony Carle and Nick Dunlap, 8-1.
The same four players for Goucher also earned a point for the Gophers (1-3) in singles play. Hoesman went up against Baker at No. 1 and came away with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. At No. 2, Spivey defeated Ellis 6-0, 6-1.
Murnin had to go three sets to complete a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win over Dunlap at No. 3; at No. 4, Bescoby polished off Peter Hoblitzell 6-2, 6-2.
Seth Manfield (Bethesda, Md./Emerson Prep) also needed a third set at No. 5 to dispose of Carle 6-3, 2-6, 6-0.
The Mustangs (0-3) avoided being swept in singles play thanks to a Eric Belton's 6-0, 6-3 win over Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont) at No. 6.
