Spivey Sweeps His Matches But Gophers Fall to Seahawks

Spivey and Hoesman Snap St. Mary's Doubles Streak

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) contributed to both of Goucher's points today, but the Gophers could only muster the pair of wins, falling to St. Mary's (Md.) 7-2.

In the doubles portion of today's contest, Goucher (3-9) earned its first point as Spivey and partner Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) completed an impressive 8-2 victory as the top pair, topping the Seahawk (8-5) duo of Andrew Gear and Mark Hardesty.

Gear and Hardesty came into the match undefeated in the spring, holding a 7-0 record at No. 1 doubles. On the year they are now 10-2 in dual matches together.

Goucher's other two doubles teams each lost to their counterparts by a score of 8-1. Pat Murnin (Salt Lake City, Utah/East) and John Bescoby (San Marino, Calif./Maranatha) fell as the second pair and Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y. / Schalmont) and Seth Manfield (Bethesda, Md./Emerson Prep) competed at No. 3.

Gear earned a measure of revenge over Hoesman, taking a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the top singles position.

Spivey fell in the first set 3-6 against Hardesty, but the junior rallied at No. 2 singles to win the second and third sets 6-4 for Goucher's lone singles victory.

The Seahawks swept the remaining singles matches.
