Freshman, Spivey Form First-Team Pairing in Doubles
TOWSON, Md. — Not only are freshman Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and junior David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) representing Goucher on the 2013 All-Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Team for their performance in singles play this season, but they also formed one of the doubles pairings that earned all-conference recognition.
Voting that determined the All-Landmark selections announced today was done by the conference's eight head coaches. They came up with a first team and a second team, with each one consisting of six players being recognized for their accomplishments in singles play during the 2012-13 season and three sets of two players who were deemed worthy of all-conference accolades for achievements in doubles competition.
The balloting also produced the recipients of several major awards, one of which went to Hoesman. He was voted Rookie of the Year in the Landmark Conference.
"I'm really pleased Seth won that award," commented Brendan Kincaid, who just completed his first season as head coach of Goucher's head coach. "There were other first-year players in the conference who had good years, but I think Seth was able to distinguish himself as the best of the group. I think he finished the season strong and performed at his best against other opponents from the Landmark Conference."
Hoesman, who went 11-8 while competing exclusively at No. 1 for the Gophers, is only third male tennis player from Goucher to be named a conference Rookie of the Year. The other two were Tim Hannigan in 1998 and Andrew Danos in 2004 when the school belonged to the Capital Athletic Conference.
Hoesman was a first-team selection in singles, while Spivey claimed a spot on the second team after going 9-10 at No. 2 this season.
When they were partnered together at No. 1 doubles, Hoesman and Spivey produced a 6-5 record. For that, the coaches placed them on the All-Landmark first team for doubles.
