BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Three freshmen from Goucher ran their fastest 6,000-meter races of the season today at the NCAA Division III Mid-East Regional.

The first Goucher runner to cross the finish line was junior Matt Spitznagel (Parkton, MD/Friends School of Baltimore). He completed the race in 28:11, good for 162nd place.

The three freshmen followed, all finishing within :24 of one another. First among the first-year runners was Adam Scipione (Walpole, MA/Walpole) in 185th place with his time of 28:36, then Charlie Rooney (Sea Bright, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) in 190th place (28:46) and then Brendan Ference (Smallwood, NY/Monticello) in 198th place (29:00).

Zach Martin (Victor, NY/Victor Central) was Goucher's fifth runner as he placed 232nd with his time of 29:45. For most of the season, Martin was the Gophers' No. 1 runner, but an illness prevented him from training in the week leading up to today's race.

As a team, Goucher finished in 33rd place with a score of 957 points.

The individual champion was Brian Harvey from Carnegie Mellon and the team champion was Haverford. Harvey's winning time was 24:44; Haverford earned a team score of 45 points for a seven-point victory over runner-up Allegheny.
