October 31, 2009
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Goucher's Joey Negreann
(Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) beat out Logan Torgeson
from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for 14th place — and
the final spot on the 2009 All-Landmark Conference Team — by
:11 today at the 2009 Landmark Conference Championship.
Negreann completed the 8,000-meter race conducted on the campus of the U.S. Armed Forces Retirement Home in 28:17 and became Goucher's first male runner to earn All-Landmark Conference honors in the sport of cross country. The last all-conference performer from one of head coach John Caslin's teams was Tom Turner back in 2003 when the school was still a member of the Capital Athletic Conference.
The next runners from Goucher to come in after Negreann were Zach Martin (Victor, N.Y./Victor Central) in 28th place and Adam Scipione (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) in 32nd. Martin was clocked at 29:25 and Scipione at 29:39. Patrick Squires (Port Republic, Md./Calvert), one of two freshmen who ran for the Gophers, placed 49th overall with a time of 30:34.
Susquehanna's Paul Thistle placed first in the meet for the third year in a row as he crossed the finish line in 26:39 for a 17-second victory over Chris Wasnetsky from Scranton.
The Crusaders also captured their third consecutive Landmark
Conference title in the sport of men's cross country with a final
team score of 24 points. Moravian was a distant second with 76
points and Juniata was third with 83. The Gophers finished in sixth
place with a team score of 159 points ahead of Drew (185 points)
and Catholic (201).
