TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's Joey Negreann (Englewood,
Colo./Cherry Creek) placed fourth overall — and was
the second runner from a Division III institution to cross the
finish line —in the 2009 Goucher Cross Country Classic which
was conducted today.
Finishing ahead of Negreann were Brett Butler and Richard Hoyt, both from the U.S. Naval Academy, and Dan Swain from St. Mary's (Md.). Butler's winning time for the 8,000-meter race was 26:53.78, giving him a more than 19-second victory over Hoyt. Negreann posted a time of 28:00.30.
The next three Goucher runners to come in following Negreann were Zach Martin (Victor, N.Y./Victor Central) in 14th place with a time of 29:14.10, Adam Scipione (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) in 18th place (29:45.24) and Nick Manta (North Wales, Pa./Abington Friends School) in 22nd (30:32.85).
With four runners among the top seven finishers, Navy captured the team title with 39 points. York was runner-up with 53 points.
Just one point separated Goucher and St. Mary's (Md.) in the
battle for third place. With Patrick Squires (Port
Republic, Md./Calvert) placing 27th overall (31:10.91),
the Gophers finished with a team score of 69 points. The Seahawks
wound up a point back in fourth place because their fifth runner
was 12 spots behind Squires in 39th place.
