SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — After taking a 31-29 lead into the second half, Goucher's offense stalled in its matchup against Puerto Rico-Bayamon, scoring only 15 points after the intermission in a 73-46 defeat this afternoon in San Juan.
The Gophers (4-6) maintained a 39-33 advantage with 12:59 left to play, but the Cowgirls scored 40 of the game's final 47 points to turn the game into a rout.
Amaka Ezeani (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) led Goucher with 16 points, finishing 8 of 13 from the field and scoring in double figures for the fourth time this year. She also added six rebounds, with five of those boards coming on the offensive end. Sharnell Huff (Bowie, Md./Bowie) chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds, while Olivia Nono (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) had a game-high eight boards.
The Gophers shot 48 percent from the floor in the first half, but that number slipped to 23.8 percent in the final 20 minutes. UPR-Bayamon, meanwhile, hit 14 of 28 shots in the second half after shooting under 30 percent before the break.
The Cowgirls, who are members of NCAA Division II, also took advantage of their opportunities from the free throw line, converting 23 of 25 attempts from the charity stripe, and they scored 21 points off of 24 Goucher turnovers.
Goucher returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 2, for a 6 p.m. matchup at Wesley. That will be the Gophers final non-conference game of the season before they resume Landmark Conference play at Moravian on Jan. 11.
