Gophers Bow to Nationally Ranked Cardinals

Cole Tallies Final Three Goals to Put Goucher Ahead at Halftime

April 9, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Goucher tallied the first goal of the second half to extend its lead over Catholic to 8-5, but the nationally ranked Cardinals responded with six unanswered goals in a span of 4:45 and went on to defeat head coach Katie Trainor's Gophers, 17-12, in a Landmark Conference game played this afternoon.

The game was tied for the fifth time when an unassisted goal by Goucher's Colleen Cole (Hollison, MA/Northfield Mt. Hermon School) created a 5-5 deadlock with 6:46 remaining before halftime. The freshman midfielder scored two more times before the period concluded as the Gophers (2-8, 1-1 Landmark) were ahead at the break, 7-5.

Goucher's lead grew to 8-5 just over 2:00 into the second half on a goal by Marlo Tersigni (Worcester, MA/Lawrence Academy), but the Cardinals (9-4, 2-0 Landmark) were not only able to wipe out their three-goal deficit, but also assume an 11-8 advantage with their run of six consecutive goals. An unassisted goal by Laura Haring with 25:21 left to play snapped an 8-8 tie and put Catholic, which is ranked 19th in the nation in Division III, ahead to stay.

Emily Blatter (Lexington, VA/Rockbridge County), Tersigni and Cole supplied the Gophers with three goals apiece; Kate Robinson was the leading scorer for Catholic as she finished with seven goals.

Tersigni, who is leading the Landmark Conference in draw controls at 5.3 per game, controlled five draws for the Gophers today.
