Gophers Bow to Rangers Despite Late Charge
Smith, Khin Account For Five Goals Apiece in 19-13 Setback
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher closed with a rush, scoring seven times in the final 8:16, but the Gophers had dug an 11-goal deficit by that time and wound up falling to Drew, 19-13, in a Landmark Conference game played this afternoon on Beldon Field.
Becca Smith (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) and Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) supplied the Gophers (6-7, 1-1 Landmark) with five goals apiece, but both players managed to score only once in the first half. The only other player to get into the scoring act for Goucher in the opening 30 minutes was Erin Reifsnyder (Austin, Texas/St. Andrews Episcopal), who reduced Drew's lead to 8-3 when she tallied an unassisted goal with 1:54 to play before halftime.
The Rangers (6-7, 1-1 Landmark) were able to stick two goals in the final 25 seconds of the period, bumping their lead up to 10-3 at the break.
Drew eventually assumed a commanding 17-6 advantage in the second half before head coach Katie Trainor's squad mounted its late charge. Khin bunched her final four goals into the final 8:16 and Smith scored twice in the final minute of play, both times reducing Goucher's deficit to six.
The Gophers finished with a slim 33-32 edge in shots, but the Rangers countered by winning 23 of the 34 draws.
Lyndsay Rossi was the leading scorer for Drew as she contributed five goals and an assist to the victory.
