TOWSON, Md. — A season-opening 9-8 victory over Bridgewater (Va.) resulted in a sweep of the weekly Landmark Conference awards for Goucher.
Erin Reifsnyder (Austin, Texas/St. Andrew's Episcopal) earned Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week recognition, while Emily Gill (White Hall, Md./North Harford) captured the conference's defensive honors. The Gophers received both weekly awards in women's lacrosse for the first time since Mary Lambert (offense) and Jenny Lucey (defense) were each recognized on March 9, 2009.
Reifsnyder aided Goucher on both sides of the field on Saturday. She led the team with four goals, going a perfect 3 for 3 on free position shots in the process, and her caused turnover in the closing seconds ended Bridgewater's final offensive push, clinching the win for the Gophers. This is the second time that Reifsnyder has earned offensive POTW accolades. She also received the award on March 12, 2012, which is the last time that a Goucher player was recognized on the offensive end.
Making her first career start as a goalkeeper, Gill stopped eight shots for the Gophers. Six of those saves came in the first half, as Goucher opened up a 7-4 advantage before the intermission. Saturday marked Gill's first appearance in goal since April 24, 2012 during her freshman season.
Goucher has now received 16 POTW awards during the 2013-14 academic year, spread out across 10 different programs.
The women's lacrosse team returns to Beldon Field tomorrow with a 4 p.m. matchup against Rowan.
