Matthews Makes 19 Saves in Loss to Mustangs

Girard, Moser Supply Goals to Gophers' Cause

Sept. 12, 2007

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Goucher scored first, but on this particular day the Gophers weren't able to match the offensive firepower that Villa Julie displayed. The Mustangs were the beneficiaries of a three-goal performance by Rose Phelan and single goals by three other players as they defeated head coach Tati Korba's squad today, 6-2.

Just 3:26 into the contest, the Gophers (1-3) assumed a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Bri Girard (Seymour, CT/Seymour). Phelan tallied back-to-back goals just 1:23 apart to put the Mustangs (3-1) ahead and Villa Julie's lead grew to 3-1 on a goal by Jennifer Rosenberger at 23:38.

Before the end of the first half, however, the Gophers closed to within 3-2 thanks to an unassisted goal by Dee Moser (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg). It was Moser's team-leading third goal of the season.

Phelan wasted little time in the second half wrapping up her "hat trick" as she banged in an unassisted goal at 48:59. Goals by Heather Redding at 65:03 and Laura Robinson at 85:00 concluded the scoring.

Only the efforts of freshman goalkeeper Kellen Matthews (Northboro, MA/Algonquin Regional) prevented the Mustangs from piling up an even higher goal total. Matthews faced 39 shots and made a career-high 19 saves.
