Gophers Bring Down Curtain on 2008 Campaign
Matthews Makes 300th Career Save in Season-Eding Setback
November 1, 2008
TOWSON, Md. – Sarah Lodge (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown) and Nicole Sanfilippo (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./The Wheatley School) hooked up on Goucher's final goal of the season, the only one the Gophers scored in their 4-1 loss to Juniata at Beldon Field that brought down the curtain on their 2008 campaign today.
By the time the game was 16 minutes old, the Eagles (9-5-1, 3-3 Landmark) had already opened up a 3-0 lead on goals by Caitlin Bigelow at 7:26, Emily Pendleton at 11:19 and Shannon Pierce at 15:46. A goal by Laura Goodlander at 56:32 made the score 4-0 in Juniata's favor in the second half.
The Gophers (7-10-1, 0-6 Landmark) avoided the shutout when Lodge tallied her fourth goal of the season at 82:59.
Sophomore Kellen Matthews (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin
Regional) went the distance in goal for the Gophers and
among the nine saves she made was the 300th of her collegiate
career. She is only the fifth goalkeeper in the history of
Goucher's women's soccer program to surpass 300 career saves.
