October 6, 2009

TOWSON, Md. — Two goalkeepers combined to make 16 saves today as Goucher and McDaniel battled through 90 minutes of regulation and a pair of 10-minute overtime periods to a 0-0 tie at Beldon Field.

Kellen Matthews (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) had to turn away 10 of the 19 shots the Green Terror (2-7-1) were able to get off during the non-conference contest. The Gophers (3-7-1) attempted 11 shots during regulation and another in the first OT, forcing Leanne Hollinger to make six saves.

Goucher got off two shots in the final minute of regulation: The first one by Kristen Gartside (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) sailed wide; the second one by Sarah Lodge (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown) required a save on the part of Hollinger.

Both keepers had to come up with a save early in the first extra session: Matthews on a shot by Lisa Jurd and Hollinger on an attempt by Shay Kettner (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall). Matthews made her final save of the contest on a shot by Kelly Crawford 1:19 into the second OT and the Green Terror got off a final shot with 1:47 remaining, but the attempt by Liz Beall was wide.

In addition to recording her third shutout of the season, Matthews lowered her goals-against average to 1.79.
