Saints Secure Initial Win by Turning Back Gophers
Matthews Passes Jacobson for Second Place in Career Saves
October 24, 2009
ARLINGTON, Va. — Goucher found out just how dangerous a team
still in search of its initial win this late in a season can be
today when Marymount scored a goal in the 73rd minute and then held
on for a 1-0 victory over the Gophers (3-11-1).
The Saints (1-13) outshot the Gophers, 11-2, in the first half, but the two teams were locked in a scoreless tie after 45:00. The lone goal of the contest was scored by Marymount's Elise Gebauer at 72:51.
With a 10-save performance in goal today, Kellen
Matthews (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) moved past
Elissa Jacobson (1991-92) and into second place in career saves in
the history of Goucher's women's soccer program. The junior
goalkeeper's career total of 433 saves leaves her only three behind
the all-time leader, Lauren Schwartz (1996-99).
