Matthews Makes 15 Saves, 50th Consecutive Start
Royals Finally Solve Junior GK in Contest's 88th Minute

TOWSON, Md. — Kellen Matthews (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional), who was starting her 50th consecutive game in goal for Goucher, had frustrated Scranton all day, making some spectacular saves to ruin some excellent scoring opportunities. But in the contest's 88th minute, the Royals finally solved the junior netminder and came up with the goal that provided them with a 1-0 Landmark Conference victory over the Gophers this afternoon.
This was the final game of the season for head coach Tati Korba's Gophers (3-13-1, 0-6 Landmark).
Matthews, who became the all-time leader in career saves at Goucher earlier in the week, stopped seven of the 15 shots Scranton (13-3-2, 3-2-1 Landmark) got off in the first half, which ended with the two teams still locked in a scoreless tie. The Royals attempted eight more shots — and Matthews made eight more saves — in the second half before Emily Boyce tallied the only goal of the contest at 87:46 with a one-touch on a free kick by Erin Unterstein.
With her 15-save performance, Matthews lowered her goals-against
average for the season to 1.87.
