Cardinals Pin 128-71 Setback on Gophers

Phillipson-Weiner Completes 500 Free in 5:45.04, First Place

October 31, 2009

TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's Lindsey Phillipson-Weiner (Merion, Pa./Lower Merion) may have had to settle for a close second when she and Catholic's Chelsey Lukens squared off in the 1,650-yard freestyle this afternoon. But when the pair went at it again in the 500 free later in the Landmark Conference meet, Phillipson-Weiner captured first place by completing the event more than three seconds ahead of Lukens.

Phillipson-Weiner's victory in the 500 free was one of only three first-place performances by Goucher swimmers in individual events today as the Cardinals (1-1, 1-0 Landmark) defeated the Gophers, 128-71.

Less than three seconds separated Lukens and Phillipson-Weiner at the conclusion of the 1650 free. Lukens' winning time in that event was 19:56.79.

Phillipson-Weiner earned nine points for the Gophers (0-2, 0-2 Landmark) with her winning effort in the 500 free where she recorded a time of 5:45.04.

Goucher's Britt Hogstrom (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union), the reigning Landmark Conference champion in three events, placed first in two of them today with her times of :56.06 in the 100 free and 2:02.58 in the 200 free.

Mara Baron (Wayzata, Minn./Breck School) was runner-up in the 200 butterfly (2:40.52).
