First-Year Swimmers Pull Away in Freestyle Relay
TOWSON, Md. — Notre Dame (Md.) made the cross-town trip and took the top spot in each of the first nine races on the way to victory.
Nicole Craver (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove Area) earned the first Goucher (1-6) victory in the 100-yard breaststroke, but by then Notre Dame (3-0) already had the duel meet locked up. The Gators finished with a 123-99 edge.
The sophomore returned to notch Goucher's only other individual win when she took home the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:23.50, just edging out Emily Jordan.
Jordan's final split cut into the lead, but Craver created enough of an advantage early to hold on.
The relay team of Abbey Wegman (Knoxville, Tenn./Berean Christian), Rachel Lyon (Fallston, Md./The John Carroll School), Emmy Martin (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) and Marykate Malone (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) closed the meet with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The group finished in 1:54.53.
After the first two legs, Goucher's seniors raced to a dead heat with the first pair from Notre Dame, but the two freshmen closed strongly to earn a :07.32 advantage. Martin separated and left a lead of over three seconds for the anchor, Malone, who doubled the gap to cruise to victory.
Wegman's split of 28.03 was the fastest in the race to give the Gophers the early lead.
