Gophers Bow to Greyhounds in Landmark Semifinals

Heinz Collects 12th Singles Victory to Tie Attarha, Grimm for Team Lead

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Goucher's 2007-08 season came to a close today when the Gophers took a 7-2 hit from Moravian in the semifinals of the inaugural Landmark Conference championship tournament.

With the win, the Greyhounds (9-5) advance to take on Scranton for the Landmark Conference crown on Saturday. In today's other semifinal, the Royals topped Catholic, 6-3.

When the Gophers lost to Moravian, 5-4, during the regular season, they earned one point in doubles play. Today, however, the Greyhounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles matches. At No. 1, Lindsey Hopper and Dyana Swan turned back Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, MD/Richard Montgomery) and Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood). 8-6.

Christina Grimm (Greenwich, CT/New Hampton) and Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, NY/The Ross School), who needed one more doubles win to tie the Goucher women's tennis program's single-season record, lost 8-1 at No. 2 to Brittany Popaca and Jennel Yelito.

The Gophers (11-8) picked up both of their points in singles play thanks to victories by Heinz at No. 2 and Scott-Giry at No. 6. Heinz defeated MaryKate Kelly 6-2, 6-3; Scott-Giry was a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (4) winner over Rebecca Angstadt.

With her victory, Heinz finished the season with a 12-6 record in singles play, tying her with Mouna Attarha (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) and Grimm for most singles wins on the team
