Greyhounds Handle Gophers, Defend Landmark Title

Scott-Giry Completes 16-1 Season with Victory at No. 5 Singles

May 2, 2009

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Only Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, N.Y./The Ross School) was victorious for Goucher in today's championship match of the 2009 Landmark Conference postseason tournament against Moravian. The Greyhounds were still able to repeat as Landmark champions by downing head coach Sally Baum's Gophers, 8-1.

Just as she was when the Gophers faced the Greyhounds back on April 10, Scott-Giry was pitted against Alexandra Hay at No. 5 singles. Scott-Giry was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Hay the first time they squared off and today she came out on top 6-2, 6-4 to conclude her 2008-09 season with a sparkling 16-1 record in singles play.

The Greyhounds (14-5) won the remaining five singles matches in straight sets. At No. 1, Jami Fein turned back Tanya Cooley (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) 6-0, 6-0; at No. 2, Dyana Swan defeated Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) 6-0, 6-1.

The Gophers (13-5) dropped all three doubles matches for only the third time all season. At No. 1, Fein and Swan knocked off Cooley and Heinz, 8-3, and at No. 2, Melissa Emery and Anna Meola recorded an 8-3 victory over Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Scott-Giry.
