6-4, 6-1 Loss Leaves Cooley with 3-1 Record at No. 1

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Goucher was handed its first loss of the 2008-09 season today when Shepherd pinned a 9-0 setback on head coach Sally Baum's Gophers (3-1).
The Division II Rams (5-2) lost only four games while sweeping the three doubles matches. At No. 1, Meredith Scaggs and Brittany Bolster turned back Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, N.Y./The Ross School) and Tanya Cooley (Arlington, Va./Wakefield), 8-2.
Cooley sustained her first loss of 2008-09 at first singles as she bowed to Bolster 6-4, 6-1, dropping her record to 3-1. Scaggs defeated Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.
In addition to Cooley, three other Goucher players entered
today's match with 3-0 records in singles play only to go down in
straight sets: Mouna Attarha (Piedmont,
Calif./Piedmont) fell to Brittany Moreland 6-4, 6-1 at No.
3, Scott-Giry to Audra Praskwiecz 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 and
Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) to Amanda
Bickerton 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.
