Gophers Improve to 20-4 in Singles Play
Heinz Battles Back to Stay Unbeaten at No. 1 Singles

FREDERICK, Md. – Even before Carly Heinz (Scotch
Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) completed her comeback
from being a set down to win at No. 1 singles today, Goucher had
already clinched a victory over Hood. But the senior's 3-6, 6-2,
1-0 (10-6) triumph over Jillian Elkaim enabled the undefeated
Gophers to pull off their second sweep in singles play so far in
2009-10.
The other time that head coach Sally Baum's squad won all six singles matches was in an 8-1 triumph over Waynesburg and that was the same score by which the Gophers (4-0) defeated the Blazers today. After four matches this season, Goucher's overall record in singles play is 20-4.
With her win, Heinz improved to 4-0 at the top spot in Goucher's singles line-up in 2009-10.
Two sets wasn't enough to determine the winner of one other singles match today, the one at No. 2 between Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) and Hood's Danielle Hunt. Bergman, who went 15-6 in singles play in 2008-09 as a freshman, prevailed 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9).
At No. 3, Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) polished off Emily Schrodel 6-0, 6-3, at No. 4, Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) downed Nicole Voelker 6-1, 6-0, and at No. 5, Ilana Gross (Cornwall, N.Y./The Storm King School) was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Lindsey Hathaway. The Blazers (0-3) forfeited at sixth singles.
There were only two contested doubles matches. At No. 1, Elkaim
and Schrodel turned back Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg,
Md./Richard Montgomery) and Lee, 9-7, while at No. 2,
Heinz and Maxwell overwhelmed Hunt and Voelker, 8-1.
