Gophers Drop One Doubles Match, Still Turn Back Seahawks
Lee Sets Stage for Sweep at Singles with Fourth Win at No. 1
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher came out of doubles play with only a 2-1 lead over St. Mary's (Md.) this afternoon, but the Gophers proceeded to prevail in all six singles matches on the way to a convincing 8-1 triumph over the Seahawks.
Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) picked up her fourth win of the season at No. 1 singles for Goucher as she defeated Melissa Bowman 6-2, 6-0. Lee also played at No. 2 doubles along with Alexandra Walsh (Greens Farms, Conn./Staples) and was part of an 8-1 victory over Alyssa Stine and Lauren Rost.
Goucher's other win during the doubles competition came at No. 1 where Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) and Ariel Lin (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) disposed of Bowman and Kathleen Ramsey, 8-3.
Lin went at No. 2 singles for the Gophers and knocked off Emily Stumpfig 6-4, 6-4, while Bergman followed at No. 3 and came out on top of Stine 6-1, 6-1.
The Gophers (7-4) stubbed their toe at No. 3 doubles as Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) and Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall) bowed to Stumpfig and Shelby Mullennix, 8-4, but both players came back to win their singles matches: Maxwell topped Rost 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 and Casey downed Mullennix 7-6 (1), 6-1 at No. 6.
The loss ended a six-match winning streak for the Seahawks (7-3).
