Gophers Pin First Landmark Setback on Rangers
Lee, Walsh Go Three Sets for Two of Goucher's Singles Wins
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher made certain that nobody will go undefeated through the Landmark Conference's regular season by turning back Drew, 6-3, this afternoon.
In knocking off the Rangers (3-3, 2-1 Landmark), who came in as the only unbeaten team in conference play this season, the Gophers were up 2-1 at the conclusion of doubles play and then added four victories during singles competition. Two of the four singles wins were by Ariel Lin (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) and Alexandra Walsh (Greens Farms, Conn./Staples) in the two matches that went to a third set.
Lin, competing at No. 2 singles, was able to bounce back from dropping the second set to defeat Drew's Sarit Ashkenazi 7-5, 3-6, 6-2; Walsh followed a similar script on the way to a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-3 triumph over Sofia Madrigal at No. 4.
Goucher's Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) had a 5-2 lead over Zoe Childs in the first set at No. 3 singles when her opponent retired.
The remaining win in singles play for the Gophers (8-5, 1-2 Landmark) came from Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) at No. 5. She topped Deanna Williams 6-3, 6-2.
Bergman and Lin teamed up to beat Childs and Madrigal, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2, Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and Walsh pinned an 8-4 setback on Williams and Ashkenazi.
