Maxwell Prevails at No. 4, Improves Singles Record to 8-0
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher made it through the fall portion of its 2012-13 schedule with a spotless record, but today, in the resumption of their season, the Gophers suffered their initial setback, a 5-4 loss to Washington (Md.).
The Gophers (4-1) trailed 2-1 at the conclusion of doubles play. The lone point came at No. 1 where Ariel Lin (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) and Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) defeated Kat Cohen and Campbell McNicol, 8-3.
Neither Lin nor Lee were victorious in singles play, however. Lin bowed to April Weaver 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 and McNicol knocked off Lee 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2.
Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) accounted for one of Goucher's three victories during the singles competition. With her 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 triumph over Cohen at No. 4, Maxwell improved to 8-0 in singles play this season.
The other two singles wins for the Gophers came at No. 3, where Alex Walsh (Greens Farm, Conn./Staples) battled back from being down a set to finish off Gyeyeon Kang 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, and at No. 6, where Emily Ruff (Easton, Md./Easton) turned back Amy Stevens 6-3, 6-3.
This was the first match of the season for the Shorewomen (1-0).
