Sally Baum will forever hold the distinction of being Goucher’s first head coach to be chosen Coach of the Year in the Landmark Conference.
In a vote by the conference’s head coaches, Baum was
selected Landmark Coach of the Year for 2007-08 as a reward for
guiding the Gophers to an 11-8 record and a spot in the
conference’s postseason tournament. After going 5-0 during
the regular season in-conference, Baum received her second Coach of
the Year commendation in 2010-11. She earned the same honor while
Goucher was a member of the Capital Athletic Conference, being
voted Co-Coach of the Year in the CAC in 2004-05. Her 1986-87 squad
won 18 matches, which still stands as a single-season school
record.
In 1991, Baum was inducted into the Slippery Rock University
Athletics Hall of Fame for her outstanding play in field hockey,
softball and women's lacrosse.
Baum, who has logged 28 seasons as the head coach of the Gophers,
and her husband, Michael, are the parents of four sons, the
youngest of which, Steve, lettered for Goucher’s men’s
tennis, soccer and swimming teams.
