Gallaudet Tames Goucher in 4

TOWSON, Md. - Goucher volleyball (5-16, Landmark 0-4) lost Tuesday night to Gallaudet University 3 sets to 1 in a competitive match.

In the first set, the teams were tied 3 times through 14-14 when the Bison pulled away for a final 25-19 score. Goucher had some trouble with serve receive late that led to a final kill to end the set.

In the second set, the teams were knotted at 8-8 when Goucher made a run to lead 20-15 and eventually won the set 25-19  to tie the match 1-1 as the Gophers used a solid defense and a connected attack to put away the Bison. The third set saw Gallaudet take the lead after a 4-4 tie and steadily increase it throughout to win 25-10 and take 2 sets to 1 lead in the match. Serve receive issues again stopped Goucher from developing an attack.

In the fourth and final set, Gallaudet jumped to an early 9-5 score but the Gophers came back to within one at 14-13. From that point on Gallaudet moved ahead to a 5 point lead at 23-18 as Goucher struggled to serve, and the Bison closed it out with a 25-18 score to win the match 3 sets to 1.

Olivia Rhodes (St. Charles, Mo.) led the stat sheet for Goucher with 25 assists for the match. Simone Brown (Pelham, N.Y.) registered 9 kills and Sarah Weeden (Monmouth Junction, N.J.) chipped in with 7 kills. Katie Hessenius (Aldie, Va.) picked up team-leading 9 digs, and Bianca Brown (North Brunswick, N.J.) had 3 solo blocks.

The Gophers are back in action this Saturday with 2 home matches. The first is at 11 am against Landmark opponent Moravian, followed by another Landmark match at 6:30 pm against Elizabethtown.
