Coles Places 28th, Earns All-Region Honors

Gophers Post Highest Finish Ever at NCAA Regionals

WAYNESBURG, PA — Fraley Coles (The Plains, VA/Highland School) became the first runner in the history of Goucher's women's cross country program to earn all-region honors when she placed 28th today at the 2006 NCAA Division III Mid-East Regional.

Coles completed the 6,000-meter race in 24:40, exactly two minutes behind the individual champion, Caitlin Bradley from Dickinson. The top 35 finishers are recognized as all-region.

Goucher had a second runner crack the top 100, becoming only the sixth female in school history to do so at regionals. Britt Honbarrier (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) crossed the finish line in 26:35, good for 96th place in a field of 281 runners.

Three more Goucher runners broke 28 minutes. Rachel Boss (Kenne, NH/Keene) placed 127th in a time of 27:04, Katie Shaw (Albuquerque, NM/Bosque School) was 146th (27:22) and Marisa Long (Hampton Bays, NY/Sachem) was 170th (27:58).

Dickinson, which had four runners among the top 10 finishers, captured the team title with 49 points. Haverford was second with 104 and Allegheny third with 156. Goucher came in at No. 20 for its highest finish in program history. The Gophers achieved a team score of 549, placing them ahead of 21 other teams including Frostburg St. (21st), Moravian (23rd), McDaniel (30th), Villa Julie (34th) and Hood (35th).
