Coles Beats All But One Across Finish Line

Goucher Places Second to McDaniel in Team Scoring

Sept. 7, 2007

WINCHESTER, Va. - Goucher's J. Fraley Coles (The Plains, VA/Highland School) was the first collegiate runner to cross the finish line this evening at the Shenandoah Cross Country Festival and her performance helped the Gophers capture second place in the final team scoring.

Only an unattached runner posted a faster time than the 23:05 Coles needed to complete the 6,000-meter race. Her time is the third-fastest in the history of Goucher's women's cross country program for a race of that distance.

One of Coles' teammates also placed among the top 10 runners this evening and a total of four Goucher runners cracked the top 20. Becky Foner (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) was three spots behind Coles in fifth place with a time of 24:25, while Kate Young (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) and Katie Shaw (Albuquerque, NM/Bosque School) were 14th and 16, respectively. Young turned in a time of 25:53 and Shaw was clocked at 26:43.

Goucher's fifth runner was Hannah Southworth (Madbury, NH/Oyster River) in 22nd place (27:48).

McDaniel, which managed to bunch four runners among the top 10 finishers, scored 37 points to win the team title by 17 points over the Gophers. Penn St.-Altoona was third with 78 points followed by Shenandoah (88), Marymount (112) and Lancaster Bible (121).
