Landmark Conference Recognizes Coles, Metzger
One for Winning 6K Race, Other for Defensive EffortOct. 8, 2007
TOWSON, Md. - Two Goucher student-athletes - a senior runner on the women's cross country team and a freshman defender on the field hockey team - were among those who today were named Players of the Week for their respective sport in the Landmark Conference for Oct. 1-7.
This marks the second time in 2007 that J. Fraley Coles (The Plains, VA/Highland School) was selected the conference's Female Cross Country Runner of the Week and the honor recognizes her first-place performance on Saturday at the Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Classic. She completed the 6,000-meter race in 24:33.37, which was more than 14 seconds faster than the runner-up.
Coles was also the individual champion at the Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Classic as a sophomore in 2005 and as a junior in 2006. This year's race was conducted on the same course that will be used for the Landmark Conference Championships later this month.
Allison Metzger (Center Valley, PA/Southern
Lehigh) was picked as the top defensive performer of the
week for the sport of field hockey. She played an instrumental role
in the Gophers' 2-1 triumph over Moravian on Saturday as she made a
defensive save with the score tied at 1-1 in the second half and
then was awarded an assist on the game-winning goal scored by
Laura Groomes (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel Area)
with 10:41 left to play.
