TOWSON, Md. – The Goucher College men's and women's cross country teams have announced their 2017 schedules. Both the men and women are poised to compete in five meets prior to heading into the postseason.
"Heading into my 24th cross country campaign, this year's Gophers are a mix of seasoned talent and new blood," claims head coach John Caslin. "We will be led by senior Soliana Goldrich and junior Kelly Johnson on the women's side and sophomore Jason Higginbotham leading a very young men's team. We'll be finding our stride by the time we reach the championship season in late October and are looking to improve upon the 2016 season."
With identical schedules, the men's and women's teams from Goucher will open their season Sept 1 when they travel across town to Stevenson to participate in the Stevenson University Opener. The 4k course has been described as, "All grass…rolling hills…great footing." Further information about this meet can found here.
The Gophers will continue to run on the road for the remainder of September, travelling to Juniata (Sept. 9), Shenandoah (Sept. 23) and Dickinson (Sept. 30). The Juniata College Invitational and Dickinson College Long/Short Invitational will give the Gophers a sneak peek at both courses prior to the postseason. Dickinson is described as a grass course with rolling hills at Big Spring High School in Newville, Pa. The women will run a 6k course with a 1,000 meter flat loop leading into the course. The men will travel along an 8k course and conclude on a 2,000 meter flat loop. Both men and women will run 4k courses to conclude the day. Further information on the meet can be found here.
On Oct. 7, the Gopher will host a gaggle of teams on campus to participate in the Goucher College Cross Country Classic beginning at 10:30 a.m. EST. The course is mostly grass with some hills weaving through the wooded areas surrounding campus. The course finishes inside Gopher Stadium around the track loop.
Goucher will take a couple weeks off in the middle of October in preparation for the postseason, with the option to add another meet.
The 11th Landmark Conference Cross Country Championship will be held at Juniata College on Oct. 28. The women will hit the course first at 11:00 a.m. EST, followed soon after by the men. The venue is the Standing Stone Golf Club in Huntingdon, Pa. – a course that opened in 1972.
Once again, the Gophers will go on a short hiatus before heading to Dickinson College again for the NCAA Mideast Regionals to be held on Nov. 11. One week later, the NCAA Cross Country National Championships will be held on Nov. 18.
