Each week in the fall we will name two Scholar-Athletes of the Week for their excellent work in the classroom. We kick off this weekly features with men's soccer junior Matt Sanders (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) and women's soccer senior Rylee McDonnell (Estell Manor, N.J./Ocean City).
Sanders, who is a business and economics major and boasts a 4.0 grade-point average, was named to the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll as a sophomore. He has appeared in 26 contests including eight starts and has posted three goals for six points on eight shots in his career. The midfielder posted goals in games against Immaculata and Hood last season and notched his first collegiate goal against Gwynedd Mercy in his freshman campaign. Sanders' uncle Mike was the sports information director at Goucher for many years.
McDonnell, who is a biochemistry and molecular biology major with a pre-med minor, holds a 4.0-grade point average and has been named to the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll in each of her first two years in Baltimore. For her career, McDonnell has started all 52 games she has played with one goal in her freshman campaign against Catholic. The senior has helped the team to nine shutouts and the team has recorded a 7-0-2 record in those contests. McDonnell started all 18 games in 2019 and helped the Gopher defense to three shutout victories including a 2-0 win against Juniata October 12 to end a 14-game conference winless streak.
