ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Junior Dwayne Morton (Waynesville, Mo./Waynesville) and first-year Nate Kaniut (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) scored 14 points, apiece, to lead the Goucher College men's basketball team in the scoring column in a 103-63 defeat at Eastern in non-conference action on Wednesday night.
With the defeat, Goucher fell to 0-4 overall, while Eastern improved to 2-2 on the young season with the victory.
In the game, Eastern got off to a good start, jumping out to a 12-2 lead on the Gophers in the first four minutes of action in the first half. Goucher was able to cut the Eastern lead down to 12-6 quickly, but an 11-0 run by Eastern extended their lead out to 23-6 over the Gophers with 11 minutes to go in the first half.
Goucher continued to struggle on the offensive end into the later portions of the first half, as Eastern took an insurmountable 40-12 lead over the Gophers with four minutes to go in the period. When the dust finally settled in the frame, Eastern took a 50-21 lead into intermission.
In the second half, the Gophers were able to double their offensive output, scoring 42 points over the final 20 minutes of game action. But, it wasn't enough to get back in the ballgame, as Eastern rolled down the stretch to collect a home win over the Gophers.
Overall, Morton and Kaniut led the way for Goucher in the win with their pair of 14-point efforts.
For Morton - who also had three assists and three steals in the game - it marked the third time on the season that he had gone into double-figures in the scoring column. Meanwhile, Kaniut posted his best game yet of his young career at Goucher, collecting his 14 points off the bench. He also dished out three assists on the night, as well.
The Goucher College men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Susquehanna for their 2017-18 Landmark Conference season opener. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
