Baltimore, MD. - Goucher College’s golf coach Hunter Brown announced on Thursday that Hillendale Country Club will serve as the home course for both the men’s and women’s golf programs. “Hillendale is an incredible facility and will be a tremendous resource for us as we establish our golf program,” Brown said.
The Gophers will conduct official practices at Hillendale and also hope to host a home tournament at the venue. Hillendale has been the site of numerous prestigious events including the Maryland State Open, the Maryland State Amateur Championship, and multiple USGA qualifiers. “The layout of the course requires precision from every part of a players game. That has made Hillendale an ideal competitive site in the past and makes it an ideal location for our players to develop their games on a regular basis. In order to score well, Hillendale requires you to shape the ball both directions, hit approaches from a wide range of distances, and have a full repertoire of short game shots,” Brown added.
Hillendale, designed by William and David Gordon, was built in 1954 and its classic layout carves through towering trees and rolling hills. In the 1970's George Fazio was hired to make updates to the course and added significant bunkering. Additional improvements in 2009 added new tee boxes and an enhanced irrigation system. The fabulous golf course is accompanied by a robust set of practice facilities. The driving range features a driving area of over 300 yards, a 30,000 square foot natural trim turf practice tee area, and a fairway practice bunker. The 4-acre short game area includes 3 practice greens and the ability to hit almost any shot imaginable inside of 60 yards. Hillendale also has two large bent grass putting greens (3,000 and 9,000 square foot in size respectively).
The Gophers men’s and women’s golf teams will commence play in the fall of 2017 and the team will begin utilizing the facilities at Hillendale at that time. “I’m extremely thankful for the staff at Hillendale Country Club and their support of Goucher Golf. I can’t wait to see how the course supports the development of our future players,” concluded Coach Brown.
