TOWSON, Md. – Four days before the Gophers open up their 2018 season with a scrimmage vs Marymount, the Landmark Conference released its preseason poll on Tuesday morning, and the Gophers were ranked fifth among the seven Landmark teams.
Leading the poll with 46 total points and two first-place votes is Catholic, followed by 2017 Landmark Conference champion Elizabethtown in second with 41 total points, along with two first-place votes. Scranton (with 38 total points and a pair of first-place votes) comes in third, followed by Drew (32 total points and one first-place vote) in fourth. Goucher tallied 18 total points in the ranking to come in fifth, followed by Susquehanna (14) and Moravian (8).
The Gophers finished 2-4 in conference play during the 2017 season but lost by no more than four goals in each of their Landmark Conference defeats. The Gophers also pushed Catholic and Drew into overtime before falling to both opponents.
The beginning of the season is very similar to year's past, with games against Hood (Feb. 18), Gettysburg (Feb. 21), Randolph-Macon (Feb. 24), and McDaniel (Feb. 28), as the Hood, Gettysburg and Randolph-Macon games will be played at home. The Gophers will also be competing against a slew of new opponents in non-conference action, including Centre (Mar. 3), Coast Guard (Mar. 10), Wesley (Mar. 14), Neumann (Mar. 17), and Immaculata (Apr. 10).
The Gophers open up conference play starting March 24th, with a home game against Scranton. The Gophers will also host Catholic (Apr. 18) and Moravian (Apr. 28) in Landmark Conference action at home, as well.
"Having only graduated four guys, we're looking to our senior class to lead the way and help reestablish Goucher within the Landmark Conference," head coach Brian Kelly said. Goucher is looking to make a playoff push for the first time since 2014.
