Leonard, Shalamanov Earn 34 Points in Individual Events
SELINSGROVE, Pa. — The trio of Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville), Georgi Shalamanov (Velingrad, Bulgaria/St. St. Kiril & Metodi) and Kyle Williams (Andover, N.J./Newton) earned a combined total of 50 points for Goucher through individual events in today's season-opening meet against Susquehanna, the runner-up at the 2010 Landmark Conference Men's Swimming & Diving Championships.
All three were also part of the Gophers' entry that took first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay, but it was the Crusaders who came out on top in the meet, 154-95.
Williams picked up 16 points in three individual events by touching first in the 100-yard backstroke (:57.13), second in the 50 back (:26.78) and third in the 500 free (5:14.49).
Leonard and Shalamanov both did one point better than Williams, securing 17 points apiece for the Gophers (0-1, 0-1 Landmark). Leonard netted nine points for his first-place effort in the 50 butterfly (:25.02) and the other eight came from being runner-up in the 100 fly (:56.25) and 100 free (:53.01); Shalamanov placed first in the 200 individual medley (2:04.96) and second in both the 1000 free (10:33.57) and 50 breast (:28.68).
The Gophers gained 11 points out of the first-place finish of Williams, Dean Silverman (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley), Leonard and Shalamanov in the 200 free relay (1:35.73).
Kevin Wons (Bedford, N.H./Souhegan) placed second behind Shalamanov in the 200 IM as he completed the event in 2:17.72, while Patrick McNeel (Flagstaff, Ariz./Flagstaff) and Brendan McFadden (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) were the runners-up in the 50 fly (:29.50) and 50 free (:23.86), respectively.
The Crusaders (1-0, 1-0 Landmark) produced the first-place performer in nine of the 10 contested individual events.
