Three Freshmen Make Debuts in Goucher's Singles Lineup
MIDDLETOWN, Pa. — A freshman playing at No. 1 picked up one of the two points for Goucher today as the Gophers suffered a 7-2 setback against Penn St. Harrisburg in their first match of the 2012-13 season.
In the first match of his collegiate career, Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) was pitted against Ben Leibig and he prevailed in straight sets, winning the opener, 6-2, and then completing his victory by taking the second set, 6-0.
David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) was at No. 2 singles for Goucher and he disposed of Evgeny Matigullin 6-1, 6-4.
Two more freshmen made their debuts in Goucher's singles lineup today: Heath Strickland (Columbia, S.C. / Richland Northeast) fell at No. 4 to David Pottle 6-2, 6-3; Richard Schuller (Merion Station, Pa. / Hyde) was beaten 6-0, 6-3 by Zachry Warriner at No. 5.
Hoesman and Strickland were partnered together at first doubles where they bowed to Leibig and Matigullin, 8-4.
The Lions (3-0) came out on top in the other two doubles matches: Vincent Lepore III and Warriner defeated Spivey and John Bescoby (San Marino, Calif./Maranatha) at No. 2, 8-5, and Pat Murnin (Salt Lake City, Utah/East) and Schuller lost 8-1 at No. 3 to Vishnu Gopalakrishnan and Pottle.
