von Ende Reaches Milestone with 3-Pointer in Second Half
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher held an opponent under 50 points for the fourth time this season when it limited Drew to 47 points tonight. The first three times that happened, the Gophers were victorious.
But head coach Didi Cotton's squad didn't quite make it to 50 points either. The Gophers, who never held a lead other than 2-0 and trailed by as many as 14 points on multiple occasions, were able to close the gap in the latter stages of the contest only to suffer a 47-41 setback.
The loss keeps the Gophers tied with Susquehanna for seventh place in the Landmark Conference.
Precious Kollock (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco), who finished with a team-high 11 points, made a layup just 18 seconds into the contest to put Goucher up 2-0, but the Gophers (5-17, 1-10 Landmark) had to wait more than seven minutes before they made their next field goal, which was a jumper in the paint by Sherlanda Buskey (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown).
The Rangers (8-14, 4-7 Landmark) opened up a double-digit lead for the first time on a 3-point basket by Jennifer Mateo that made the score 22-12 with 5:18 remaining before halftime.
Goucher headed into the final five minutes of the contest down 43-32, but went on a 9-2 run and closed to within 45-41 on a layup by Kiara Doughty (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) with 18 seconds left to play. Two free throws by Danielle Barber with :15 showing on the clock restored Drew's lead to six points.
Elizabeth von Ende (Leawood, Kan./American Hebrew Academy) became just the fifth player in the history of Goucher's women's basketball program with 100 3-point baskets during her career when she connected on a 3-point attempt with 7:52 remaining in the second half. She's the first to reach the milestone since Shadae Swan became the all-time leader with 116 in 2007-08.
Barber and Mateo were the top two scorers for Drew as they supplied the Rangers with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Victoria Ault, who captured 22 rebounds when Drew defeated Goucher, 64-42, back on Jan. 20, nearly duplicated that performance as she was credited with 20 rebounds tonight.
