Twelve-Point Deficit Shrinks to Two Before Time Expires
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher was able to knock a 12-point deficit with 6:39 left to play down to two points, but the Gophers could never wrest the lead from Mt. Aloysius as they fell to the visiting Mounties, 64-60, this afternoon in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center.
The first possession of the contest ended with Kiara Doughty (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) draining a mid-range jumper to put Goucher up 2-0, but Mt. Aloysius responded with a run of 11 consecutive points that wasn't stopped until Brittany Logan (Ft. Washington, Md./Friendly) made a free throw to give the Gophers (1-2) their first point in nearly six full minutes.
Goucher was able to regain the lead on a basket by Doughty with 5:17 remaining before halftime, but the Mounties took it right back thanks to a 3-point field goal by Dani Rhoades on their subsquent possession. The teams went to their respective locker rooms with Mt. Aloysius up by one, 26-25.
What was a one-possession game at 45-42 in favor of the Mounties midway through the second half took on the look of an impending blowout when Lindsy Sammarco buried 3-point baskets on three successive possessions for Mt. Aloysius to put her team on top 54-42. The Gophers got as close as two points twice down the stretch, the first time on a 3-pointer by Elizabeth von Ende (Leawood, Kan./American Hebrew Academy) with 1:46 left to play and then on a pair of free throws by Shante Atkinson (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) with exactly 1:00 showing on the clock.
Over the final 60 seconds, however, the Gophers missed a pair of 3-point shots and also two free-throw attempts, plus they committed a costly turnover when it was still a one-possession game.
von Ende was the leading scorer for Goucher as she furnished the Gophers with 14 points. Sharnell Huff (Bowie, Md./Bowie) added 12 points and Sherlanda Buskey (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) delivered 10 points off the bench.
Kaylee Keagy from Mt. Aloysius led all scorers with 20 points.
